Low Oxygen Levels And Lack Of Sleep Can Lead To Dementia

This was discovered by  researchers at the  Veterans Administration in Hawaii , who collected data from 167 men with an average age of 84 years, and who were studied until their death, an average of 6 years. The study found that people who had changes in brain tissue also had low oxygen levels in the blood. This is related to the development of dementia.

The results were based on the fact that abnormalities in the brain are often found in people who have trouble sleeping and who have low oxygen levels in the blood.

In their final analysis, the researchers found that patients who spent between 77% and 99% of their sleep cycle with low blood oxygen levels were up to four times more likely to develop brain damage. They concluded that people who have low oxygen levels in their blood when they sleep are more prone to abnormalities in the brain, which are similar to dementia.

Research leader Dr. Rebecca P. Gelber of the  Pacific Islands VA Health Care System  and  Institute for Pacific Health Research and Education in Honolulu, Hawaii,  said their findings showed that low levels of oxygen in the blood and sleep problems can contribute to brain damage and dementia.

She points out that more research is needed to link sleep problems to dementia. But the results are very interesting, especially when we take into account that the number of people with sleep disorders has increased in recent years.

Their study was published in the medical journal  The American Academy of Neurology,  entitled ” Association of Brain Lesions at Autopsy with Polysomnography Before Death.”  It contains  important information about the amount of sleep, oxygen content in the blood, and sleep apnea.

What is the cause of low levels of oxygen in the blood?

According to experts, low levels of oxygen in the blood can be due to the following factors:

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Anemia with acute pulmonary failure syndrome (ARDS)
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Emphysema
